Chicago Manifesto

In 1991, educators, teachers, parents and citizens of diverse nationalities came together to define a new kind of education with the Chicago Manifesto.

We share these visions and guiding principles:

Principle 1 – Educating for Human Development
Principle 2 – Honoring Students as Individuals
Principle 3 – The Central Role of Experience
Principle 4 – Holistic Education
Principle 5 – New Role of Educators
Principle 6 – Freedom of Choice
Principle 7 – Educating for a Participatory Democracy
Principle 8 – Educating for Global Citizenship
Principle 9 – Educating for Earth Literacy
Principle 10 – Spirituality and Education

The new paradigm presented in the GATE (Global Alliance for Transforming Education) Manifesto, proposes a cultural shift:

From...

Emphasis on the development of educational programs to...
Emphasis on human development

Stabilizing common standards for everyone to...
Recognizing and developing the skills and talents of each individual

External control and inflexible roles to...
Modeling and encouraging self-discipline

Placing parents in a secondary role to...
Considering parents as active partners

Creating isolated learning environments to...
Connecting with the local environment to assure a global learning experience

Having specialized teachers who manage fixed programs to...
Considering the teacher as a resource and facilitator who responds to every potentiality

Considering students as passive receivers of information to...
Inviting students to become participants in their own growth

Stimulating competition to...
Encouraging cooperation and collaboration

These are the key points of light that we intend to illuminate our path.
