About Damanhur

DamanhurThe Federation of Damanhur is an eco-society based upon ethical and spiritual values. Damanhur has been awarded by a United Nations agency as a model for a sustainable future. Damanhur’s philosophy is based on action, optimism and the idea that every human being lives to leave something of him or herself to others and to contribute to the evolution of humanity as a whole.

Founded in 1975, the Federation has about 1,000 citizens and extends over 500 hectares of territory spread throughout Valchiusella in the foothills of the Piedmont Alps in Italy. Damanhur promotes a culture of peace and equitable development through solidarity, voluntary work, respect for the environment, commitment to the arts, and social and political engagements. In addition to centers and representatives in Italy, Europe, Japan and the United States, Damanhur cooperates with international organizations committed to the social, civic and spiritual development of the planet.

Damanhur has a constitution, a system of complementary currency, a daily newspaper and magazine, art studios, a medical and scientific research center, a free university, and a school for children through middle school. Damanhur is renowned throughout the world because its citizens have created the Temples of Humankind, an extraordinary underground work of art, completely made by hand, dedicated to the reawakening of divinity within every human being. The Temples are considered by many as the Eighth Wonder of the World.

Damanhur is a member of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN).
